What is
teaching?
According to Nwachi (1991), define
teaching as the process of imparting knowledge from one person to another and
guiding of some one to behave in a particular manner.
Teaching is a process that explains
how some thing is done and it can be formal or informal. Formal that is when it
occurs in class room setting while informal is when its takes place out side
school settings (Conner, 2015).
Teaching is more complex in nature and
its deals with different techniques, strategies, approach that will facilitate
learning.
What is
instruction?
Instruction simply means giving direction
i.e instructing some one on what to do and how to do it. It makes the leaner
dependent on the teacher (instructor). There is need to understand an
instruction and also follow it strictly in order to accomplish a task.
Instruction is not as complex as teaching (Conner)
Differences
between Teaching and Instruction
1.
Instruction
is primarily concerned with the development and imparting of knowledge and understanding
in the leaner about something, a system or a process (Aggarwal, 2005). While teaching
is not only concern with development and understand but also involves
technique, Strategy, Approach that will facilitate learning (Conner 2015).
2.
Instruction
is the process where by the environment of the learner is deliberately managed
to enable him or her to learn, to exhibit certain behaviors under specific condition
(Brunner 1966) while teaching deals will all the domain of pupils behaviors i.e.
cognitive, affective behaviors e.t.c (Oladosu,
2009).
3.
Instruction
is an intentional facilitation of learning toward identified learning goals
which may not required a live teacher because it can be mediated by instructional
materials, text books e.t.c. (Smith and Ragan, 1999) while the process of
teaching involve a live teacher as a fundamental requirement (Oladosu, 2009).
4.
Teaching
is a process that involves how something is done while instruction is telling
how something is done i.e. giving instruction.
5.
Teaching
deals with the over all development of an individual while instruction works
for skills development.
6.
Teaching
is a method that allowed the teacher to instruct the learner without necessary
imposing any thing on the learner while in instruction; the learner must obey
the command i.e. Instruction (Oladosu, 2009).
7.
Instruction
stresses on acquisition of skills while teaching stresses on teaching from
concrete to abstract, simple to complex etc (Jekayinfa, 2009).
Conclusion
Teaching
explains how to do something and instruction is an action that tells the leaner
what to do and what not to do but both can be used interchangeable in education.
